Breaking Language Barriers Through Music
Many college students struggle to find language courses that fit their academic schedule, and self-study can feel overwhelming and uninspiring. Traditional methods often fail to keep learners engaged, making it difficult to stay motivated outside of class.

The Core User Needs
To better understand the needs of language learners, I interviewed five students from different backgrounds. They highlighted five key elements they wanted in a language-learning app:
- Culture Integration – Learning should be enriched with cultural insights to keep it engaging.
- Personalized Learning Path – Content should adapt to different proficiency levels and goals.
- Study Companion – Users need interactive ways to practice with teachers or peers.
- Integration With Real Life Situation – Lessons should reflect how languages are used in everyday situations.
- Effective Learning Resources – Materials must be relevant, practical, and easy to apply.
Rough Sketches
Initially, I explored three approaches: a structured self-study app, an online tutoring system, and a gamified learning platform. However, each had limitations-too rigid, not engaging enough, or difficult to maintain motivation. The final direction merges the best aspects of each into an intuitive, enjoyable experience.

Wireframes
This innovative approach turns language learning into an interactive music experience. Users sing along with lyrics, tapping on highlighted words to reveal flashcards with definitions and pronunciation tips. Achieving high scores unlocks new songs, keeping motivation high while reinforcing learning through repetition and active participation.
Prototype
Early iterations lacked visual harmony and smooth navigation. Through iterations, I refined the typography, color scheme, and UI flow to create a seamless and visually engaging experience. The final prototype ensures a fluid and intuitive interaction, making language learning more enjoyable and effective.
Impact and Outcome
This karaoke-style learning app redefines language acquisition by blending education with entertainment. By integrating music, real-time pronunciation feedback, and interactive challenges, it transforms passive learning into an immersive, engaging process. This project showcases how thoughtful UX design can turn a daunting task into an enjoyable habit—helping users stay motivated, build confidence, and master a new language with ease.
